Spiritual Adventure Time!
Spiritual Adventure Time is the best! What is it? Read on. 😊
After I'd peered inside a volcano . . .
. . . and patted a silverback gorilla. I danced. I sang. And I slept under the African skies contemplating incredible beauty.
But nothing quenched my soul.
So, I added a spiritual component to my quest
. . . which was weird because I grew up in the church but I didn’t really like it. I thought, God? No thank you, life with God would be boring and I'd have no cool friends.
I studied chakras, walked labyrinths, and searched for a sweat lodge. Then I made pilgrimages to Jim Morrison’s grave and Loch Ness.
But as I ran from God, I ran into Him at every turn!
He'd offer me a fall leaf in May or lead me to a 4-leaf clover patch. Seriously, who else could do that?
When I took a class called The Artist's Way (which used Julia Cameron's book by the same name as curriculum), I invented Spiritual Adventure Time!
God and I visited creative prayer rooms around the country. Then we moved to the Holy Land.
That's where a local told me about a spiritual adventure he had.
Mohammad had just become a Christian. He was concerned about whether he’d go to heaven or hell. So, he and a friend decided to have an all-night prayer vigil.
“'I asked the God,' he told me, 'am I going to the heaven or the hell?' God showed me a piece of paper and told me to fold the top corner down."
As Mohammad told his story, he demonstrated.
"God said, 'That represents the church.’ Next, He showed me to fold the other corner down." Mohammad continued with his example.
"‘That', God said, 'represents the mountain."
As Mohammad made 2 or 3 more folds, he explained that God told him a bird on top of the mountain was going to give him a message.
"Then, he said, God told me to cut the paper in half. Some fell to the left and some to the right."
As Mohammad unfolded the pile on the left, he arranged it on a maroon towel. "In Arabic," he said, "that spells al naar. It means the fire and that's what we call hell! But, God said, ‘You are not going to hell because of that,’ and He pointed to the paper on the right."
For a moment, he and I looked at each other. We didn't move. Then he reached for the last bit of paper and unfolded . . . a cross! 😳
I'm not lying. I have a picture of that maroon towel.
So, as we hang out with God
Let's expect miracles, because "faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see" (Hebrews 11:1, NLT).
Faith is one of your superpowers!
