Need God? You Might Not Think So Till You See How Good He Is!

What keeps you from more of God or hanging out with Him? Would you do anything He asked? We all have sticking points. For me, I thought, need God, not me. Life would be boring, and I’d have no cool friends.

Boy, was I wrong!

These days, I have the most eclectic mix of unique and special friends. Duh, it’s not about “being cool” and life with God is never dull.

We go on these crazy adventures, driving across the country or across town for a sunrise service at Easter. (This one’s a good one if you’re in the Denver area, Red Rocks Canyon.)

I have a feeling that since you’re here . . .

You may not attend church, but you’re spiritual. And you’re brave even if you don’t think so.

I’ve been praying for you and I believe you’re hungry for authenticity, true community, a safe place where you can be vulnerable, share your stories and listen, or lurk, a place to cross paths with fellow travelers where we can seek and share and grow, a place to wonder with friends.

I believe you long to love and be loved, even when wrestling with questions that don’t have clear and simple answers, maybe especially then. And you don’t mind a place to come in out of the rain and detox from the crazy world we live in. Who doesn’t mind that?

You won’t be fooled. You have much to offer. And you’re going to make a difference in the world around you.

You’re willing to weep with those who weep even though it’s much more fun to rejoice with those who rejoice and create with those who create.

Whether it’s with a prophetic word or a yummy treat, you long to change your world with a spirituality that breathes life into the people you already love.

You crave meaning and you want your life to count, right?

But here’s the tension

Admitting a need for more of God and being willing to yield to His ways costs something, doesn’t it?

It may be time spent building that relationship or angst, when we can’t sit across the table and talk, clearly hearing all God has to say.

So we wonder Why isn’t He talking to me?

Or, Am I making this stuff up? Is this really what God wants me to do?

And we’re not mean. Some of the things we feel nudged to do light a spark of excitement inside. They’re fun and we can’t wait to see the unexpected outcomes, like when we surprise someone with a special gift.

But there are those other times where needing God and following His ways isn’t what we feel like doing.

It can take laying another piece of ourselves down, giving up an “I want” and going out of our way, like when we just want to want to go home, curl up, and watch an episode of our show but God has something else in mind.

And funnily enough, it’s usually only a little stretch, but still, it’s a struggle.

  • Are you tired of the hamster wheel of anxiety?
  • Don’t you just want to get on with it and make that difference?
  • And wouldn’t it be cool if someone would bankroll you?

Can I tell you something?

Peace, purpose, and provision, all of those and so much more come with God’s presence.

The decision that changed my life

I was a party girl addicted to travel, always seeking something bigger than myself until I realized all that stuff I longed for was only found in God.

So, as you can see, I drank the Kool-Aid. I finally owned it:

I did need God.

I came to Him selfishly; maybe we all do at first.

But somewhere in the process, in the amazing journey, where He loved me too much to leave me where I was, I started to ask Him to change me.

And He healed me. He’d explain things inside. I’d be reading or watching TV, heck, I’d be sitting on the toilet and these prolific understandings would come to mind. I’d have to hurry and get to my journal, so I wouldn’t forget them.

Or, something would come out of my mouth in conversation, when moments before, I hadn’t even known that little piece of wisdom.

God makes you look really good.

And He gets us. You know how it is when you spend a lot of time with someone who begins to know you really well. They know how you think and what you’re going to say before you say it.

God knows us even better than we know ourselves.

He knows every single bit of my past, the ugliness of the thoughts I sometimes have, so that could be scary, but He LOVES me.

When I asked God what He wanted for His birthday . . .

Do you know what He said?

“More of you.” This one who knows all my weird stuff, not only loves me but wants more of me.

Each time I ask Him that same question, His answer is always the same. It’s become an inside joke. Because I think I’ve given Him my all, but He knows where I haven’t, and we go another round.

But don’t let that freak you out as if He’s demanding, takes everything, more than we want to give.

He’s not like that at all.

But that’s how I often struggle with the request at first. For whatever reason, I think I know best in dealing with whatever it is I’ve been holding onto.

As I yield to His invitation and carry on in the next leg of the journey, He teaches me even more about myself, gives me the desire to ask Him to make me more like Him, divine appointments, tears, and goosebumps abound.

Those are my confirmations that I’m on the right track.

We’re going to have hard times in this life. There’s no way around that, but when we choose His presence and invite Him to join us, it’s life-changing.

Wouldn’t you like supernatural help?

That’s why I can’t stop sharing my stories

Because maybe you or someone you know wants more of God?

When I lived in Jericho and worked with Living Bread International Church handing out food and clothes to the locals, I met a lot of Muslims.

They believe Jesus is going to judge us at the end of time. So, I used to ask them, “Well, then don’t you want to get to know Him now?”

For me, I’d heard people talking about this personal relationship with Jesus Christ, so I just assumed He’d chat and started a conversation in my mind. I know some people probably think I’m nuts, but I hear answers in that wisdom I was telling you about.

I know when I didn’t come up with something.

The Bible says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” (Rev. 3:20, ESV)

That’s been my experience. We hang out together and come to think of it, I’ve become quite the foodie, maybe that’s why.

I always planned on getting right with God on my deathbed. You know, live life my way, but snag that one-way ticket to heaven everyone talks about on my way out.

Thank God I didn’t wait until then. I’d have missed out.

For so many reasons, God rocks.

So, if you want what I’m having . . .

I’d be glad to share my treasure map with you.

You know, my stories that hold the lessons I’ve learned. Because wherever you are with God, there’s always more.

Or maybe you’re not sure any of this is real and secretly think God doesn’t exist and all this is a bunch of baloney . . . but in some small way, you want to believe.

I love that you’re here! 😁

And if that piece that wants to believe dares to give it a shot, it’s my privilege to take hold of your hand and do it with you, but only if you want.

Can I tell you something?

Way more than any desire we have for God, He has for us.

And He promises,

“As you seek me with all of your heart, I will be found!” (Jeremiah 29:13)

So I’ve got a plan . . .

. . . or at least I’ve got a relationship with a God who has a plan, a personalized adventure for each one of us.

I won’t deny it. He surprises me all the time. Like with this post, it wasn’t what I was going to talk about. I planned to write about Lent and fasting.

See, God is full of good surprises. Who wants to fast, right?

So, where do we go from here?

To go deeper with God, we need to communicate with Him. So, here’s the golden question:

How do we hear God?

You know that’s our superpower, right?

And before some of you get all freaked out thinking I can’t do that! I’ve got something for you.

Instead of 5 Steps to Hearing God More Clearly, I’ve got a gold nugget called 5 Ways You’ve Already Heard God (without realizing it). I’m putting together a treasure chest that starts with this gold nugget.

Now, the critical question of every fairy tale

And maybe our own story, too, what’s at stake? Like here, what if we don’t want more?

Well, we’re all in this together, right, whatever it is we’re in, our family, our job, or this website.

And what I found out when I lived for myself, is that I missed out.

Sure, sometimes I got my own way and felt like I had control, well, over a few things.

But now that I follow when God nudges, I love how often people say, “That was exactly what I needed to hear,” when I know I didn’t come up with it on my own.

I feel God’s blessings and those around me feel them, too, even though I’m positive God works in ways I’m not even aware of because I’ve seen that when I’ve watched my friends follow Him.

It’s only through God that we make the difference we’re hoping for, with a splash we can’t make on our own and far-reaching ripples we won’t even know about until we get to heaven.

So, here’s a real bummer.

When we, no, I won’t point a finger at you, when I don’t follow God in the wild adventure He has for me, not only do I lose out, but so do the people around me.

I hate to think about the God-ripples we’ve missed out on when I haven’t followed.

God’s way cooler than anyone ever said.

So yes, once I found that out, I’m not here because I need God. I’m here because I want Him.

When we hang out with God, life gets better. And He does have a unique adventure for all of us . . . but we have to want it.

So if you want to subscribe, join my spiritual adventure team, and receive the gold nuggets, click here.

It will take you to the subscription page where it will ask you for your email address. Then, you’ll get another confirming it’s really you. I hate spam so don’t worry, I won’t bombard you and I won’t share your email address with anyone else either, promise!

And if you don’t want more of God, that’s okay

Of course, you’re still welcome!

I just wanted to tell you why I write, you know, be honest and authentic.

And I would love, love, love to hear why you don’t want God, not so I can twist your arm, I’m just curious. As I said, I didn’t want God before, but now that I’ve had such a cool time with Him, I forget what that’s like.

And I would love for all that to be part of our conversation, too.

So, what keeps/kept you from more of God?

  1. I know what used to keep me from God…. fear. Fear of being judged by others, fear of ridicule. My circle of friends at that time were not believers. Some were Catholics but only went to church on the required holidays; they didn’t actually have a relationship with God and they certainly didn’t discuss their beliefs. Some openly mocked people of faith. And my husband, at the time, was one of the “mockers”. So as much as I may have wanted to seek God, I kept quiet about it. I read daily devotions sometimes and prayed, but wasn’t really sure if I believed.

What finally changed? The marriage ended, and God brought me to a new place, literally. I met my current husband, a believer, and we moved to Texas where I was surrounded by supportive Christians! I finally felt free to try new churches until I found one that fit. Since then I’ve moved back home and found a good group of Christian friends. I’ve had to step back from some of the old friends who mock prayers but I now have an ongoing daily relationship with Jesus. ❤️

    1. Yes! Me, too. A good group of believing friends definitely helps. And I know now not everyone has access to that. I would LOVE for us to be a group like that for those who need one!
